Cadillac Ranch
$1,000Tino Soriano
Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo, Texas, 2004)
This boy clearly found a fascinating seat on a car in Cadillac Ranch, an attraction in Amarillo, Texas. Ten Cadillacs, covered in graffiti, are buried nose down in a single file in a cow pasture. Barcelona-based photographer Tino Soriano, divides his time between photojournalism and travel photography. He captured the sculpture's artistry and appeal. This unconventional exhibit was created in 1974 by the avant-garde design group, Ant Farm. The cars are periodically repainted - in 2012, with rainbows to mark a celebration of Gay Pride and in June 2020 in black, with the words, "Black Lives Matter." $750Andy Richter
Keshi Ghat Meditation (Vrindavan, India, 2016)
Over the sacred Yamuna River, a man meditates at Keshi Ghat, a holy Hindu site. The Hindu deity Krishna is believed to have bathed here after killing the demon Keshi, who symbolizes vanity and ego. Yogis curtail these tendencies through chanting and humble service. This photo is part of a series called "Serpent in the Wilderness" by award-winning photographer Andy Richter. Richter, a yoga practitioner and visual storyteller, spent five years traveling to places that are relevant to yoga's past and present and working with many of the world's great saints and yogis. Glory in Restoring
$500Sam Kittner
Glory in Restoring (Washington, DC, 2014)
It takes the eye of an architectural photographer (with a photojournalism background) to find exquisite beauty in a building covered by scaffolding. DC-based Sam Kittner had good material to work with - the beautiful dome of the U.S. Capitol Building - and a knack for capturing the essence of a building. The restoration project started in 2014, and involved new paint and repairing or replacing ornate ironwork to preserve the original dome. Making Way for a Sea Lion
$1,000Enric Sala
Making Way for a Sea Lion (Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, 2015)
This image of a Galápagos Island sea lion chasing a school of Salema fish is breathtaking. The photographer is Enric Sala of Catalonia, Spain, a former university professor specializing in marine conservation ecology who suddenly realized that he was "writing the obituary" of sea life instead of protecting it. He quit his job and in 2008 became a full-time conservationist as a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, and launched the Pristine Seas project to explore and protect the ocean. In 2015, the expedition went to the Galápagos to learn more about the islands' marine ecology. Soon after, he met with the Ecuadorian president to discuss the need for greater conservation. The president then announced a vast new marine sanctuary there. "Ecuador has shown tremendous leadership by protecting one of the most globally valuable places in the ocean," Sala said. Thriving in America
$500Wayne Lawrence
Thriving in America (Detroit, Michigan, 2017)
This portrait of Iman Saleh, a journalism student at Wayne State University in Detroit, speaks volumes about how Muslims are part of the wonderful tapestry of American identity. Saleh's parents immigrated from Yemen. Wayne Lawrence, a St. Kitts-born, Brooklyn-based visual artist, took the portrait for a special 2018 National Geographic issue on diversity in America. The photo ran in an article entitled "How Muslims, Often Misunderstood, Are Thriving in America." According to National Geographic, Lawrence's work is "rooted in the documentary tradition" and "seeks to illuminate the complexities of human experience." A Most Unusual Place
$500Wayne Lawrence
A Most Unusual Place (Vermont, 2017)
In a rundown barn in rural Vermont stands the Museum of Everyday Life. French photographer Stéphane Lavoué captures this curious building that shuns fine art and instead celebrates "beloved objects we use every day." The items were found in farm sheds or fields. Past exhibits have featured toothbrushes, safety pins and locks and keys. The idea is to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. Lavoué peaks our interest in his portrayal of this weather-worn museum amid snow banks in the middle of nowhere. To see more of Stephane Lavoué's work, visit http://www.stephanelavoue.fr.

Paradise Church, Camp Wildfire
$500Stuart Palley
Paradise Church, Camp Wildfire (Paradise, California, 2018)
In November 2018, a small campfire, whipped by heavy winds, turned into an inferno nearly wiping out the town of Paradise, California. Disney artist Shane Grammer, who hailed from a nearby area, turned the ruins into beauty with his striking murals. This mural adorns what's left of the walls of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The photo was taken by Stuart Palley, who is known for his documentary work on wildfires, water use and climate change. A veteran wildfire fighter, Palley is currently covering the ongoing California wildfires. To see more of Stuart Palley's work, visit www.stuartpalley.com or @stuartpalley.

A Radioactive Selfie
$500Mike Hettwer
A Radioactive Selfie (Chernobyl, Ukraine, 2018)
It seems like an odd tourist destination, but as many as 400 visitors pay as much as $500 a day to spend time in Chernobyl, the site of the worst nuclear accident in history. This tourist brought his own mask and donned it around the area, including the abandoned worker city of Pripyat. Photographer Mike Hettwer, known for his science, archaeology and paleontology stories, has traveled to 90 countries, including this blighted section of Ukraine. This photo, featured in a 2020 issue of National Geographic, combines an optical camera image with a gamma radiation overlay in a novel process.
