The Liberty Torch (Philadelphia, Pa, 1876)

Did you know that the torch held by the Statue of Liberty was first displayed in Pennsylvania? Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people to mark the 100th anniversary of the United States. He finished Lady Liberty's torch (and part of her arm) and her head first, and they went on display, shown here at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. After that, they were exhibited in Madison Square Park in New York City. It took time to raise funds for the pedestal, and thanks to fierce lobbying by Joseph Pulitzer and his newspaper, The New York World, the job got done. The statue was dedicated in 1886.
