Charles D'Emery

The Birth of Mount Rushmore (South Dakota, 1937)

At the request of sculptor Gutzon Borglum, photographer Charles D'Emery documented, over a period of 14 years (1927-41), the carving of this historic monument into the Blacks Hill of South Dakota. Dangling off ropes and scaffolding with his heavy equipment, D'Emery took photos of the workers toiling away at the sculpture in a mountainside. Lincoln's head was one of the most challenging feats because his beard was difficult to carve. Lincoln's head was dedicated on Sept. 17, 1937, on the 150th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
