Michelle and Mandela (Houghton, South Africa, 2011)

On her first solo official visit to Africa, First Lady Michelle Obama was overjoyed to meet former President Nelson Mandela at his home in South Africa. She visited along with her two daughters in 2011 when the legendary anti-apartheid leader was a frail 92 and hardly receiving guests. "You cannot imagine how important your legacy is to who I am, to who my husband is," she told Mandela, according to Politico. "I just said thank you, thank you, thank you." This official White House photo was taken by award-winning photojournalist Samantha Appleton, who is known for her work at the Obama White House as well as at ground zero and in Iraq and Afghanistan.
