Marthe
$450Flora Ramirez-Bustamante
Marthe
oil on canvas
11 x 14 inches
Unframed
"Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard were very interested in cameras and both produced a large number of snapshots of their mistresses and wives outdoors in the nude. I have been collecting copies of those snapshots because I find them very intriguing, very undefined, and imprecise. Passages from dark to light are also mysterious. I have always been interested in working on producing an interpretation of these black and white images into oil paintings. This one is based on a snapshot by Pierre Bonnard. The original photo says: "Marthe with her back to the camera, holding her nightgown. 1900-1901."
"I am a Spanish-born artist and a self-taught artist. My works are metaphors of nostalgia and draw an awkward beauty out of humble materials, creating pieces that reflect the fragility of my world." - Flora Ramirez-Bustamante

"I wanted to create a piece that was blue and was in the shape of a square. So one night, I went to sleeping thinking about it and focusing on a blue square. I dreamt about a god with a ball of life-potential pulsating in her hands. She looked over it in deep thought, debating on whether or not to create life." The piece was professionally framed by Seattle Custom Framing in Belltown, Seattle. It is in a white 16" x 20" frame with a weighted mat and UV protected museum glass.

Mending Coast
$600Sara Everett
Mending Coast
acrylic, cyanotype, rust, and thread
21.5 x 31 inches
Unframed
Cyanotype is a photographic process invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, which was then used by Anna Atkins to illustrate her book British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Nowadays cyanotypes are more widely known as sun printing and a non-toxic nature print process explored by children. Adding the unpredictable element of water and environment further expands this photographic process to create more spontaneous effects. Much of the blue in this piece was created by printing along the shoreline of Lincoln Park, capturing the waves of a passing ferry.
"My pieces all begin as several paintings of abstract color play in acrylic, cyanotype, and rust on paper which are then torn apart to find new territories. I stitch my found landscapes together as an act of mending, trying to make sense of the shifting environmental impacts of climate change." - Sara Everett

Sovereign
oil on wood panel

Sovereign was started and finished in 3 days for the CoCA marathon and auction. Sovereign is a human figure standing vulnerable against an abstract environment reflecting light from himself. He looks outwards, holding himself inwards. While his gesture and nudity commonly describe a vulnerability, I prescribe a strength in bare humanity, in its ability to connect emotionally with each other. His look outward may be a search for connection, it may be a warning, a threat. Our relationship with him is a reflection of our own relationships.

For George Floyd. George Floyd's death detonated a bomb of rage: rage against Derek Chauvin who cruelly and carelessly took his life, against the police bystanders who did nothing, against a community who allowed this to happen, against a country filled with violence and racism, and our internal helpless rage that most of us who have power and privilege did so very little, despite the growing list of lives cut down for the months, years and decades before George Floyd.

orbital debris
india ink on 400 series bristol smooth paper
12 x 9 inches
Unframed
"This piece started during one of the live drawing sessions with artist, Kyle Krauskopf. He chose the theme "Space." I knew that the SpaceX + NASA launch was going to be happening soon and my mind went to the impacts of space exploration. A couple of years ago, I listened to a podcast about orbital debris, also known as space junk.
Did you know that there are millions of pieces of space junk flying around Earth? They are pieces left over from collisions, parts of rockets and satellites, basically remnants leftover from 50+ years of space travel. There are no international laws about who is responsible to clean it up, however, every country that has traveled to space should share the responsibility of doing so. If humans do end up living on the red planet, will they be more mindful about how they treat their new home? Or is it another colonial conquest driven by greed, pride, and ego? A future of the haves living on Mars and the have nots left behind on Earth, surrounded and filled with debris."
