Just south of Old Town Alexandria, set on one of George Washington's five original Mount Vernon farms, Mount Vernon Country Club is one of the most quietly historic private golf experiences in the Washington, D.C. region. The 18-hole, par-71 layout (6,759 yards from the back tees) was crafted in two stages - the front nine designed by Russell Roberts opened in 1961 with an exhibition match featuring Sam Snead (who shot a 67 that day), and the back nine was added in 1968 by acclaimed mid-Atlantic architect Ed Ault. The course has been thoughtfully refined over the years by Bill Love and is defined by mature, tree-lined fairways, natural creeks and water features, and a series of artfully shaped sand-flowered green complexes characteristic of post-war American parkland design. Members and guests enjoy meticulously conditioned bent-grass surfaces, a friendly walkable routing, and a stately Georgian-revival clubhouse with terrace views down the course - a refined Virginia member-club experience steeped in genuine American history.
Designer: Russell Roberts (front nine, 1961) / Ed Ault (back nine, 1968) / Bill Love (modern improvements)
