Just outside Philadelphia in leafy Plymouth Meeting, Sunnybrook Golf Club is a classic, understated private retreat with deep roots in the region's golf history. The club traces its origins to 1913, when a small group of founders - including famed amateur architect George C. Thomas - broke away from the Philadelphia Cricket Club and opened an original Donald Ross course in 1915. When the construction of Route 309 compromised that layout, the club relocated to the rolling former William Disston farm, where the present 18-hole course was designed by William Gordon and his son David and first played in 1956. Set across a hillside with a creek and ravine winding through the property, Sunnybrook is best known for its bold, distinctive greens and a strategic routing that rewards thoughtful shot-shaping and precise iron play. Recognized as one of the area's toughest tests, it has hosted both the USGA Senior Men's Amateur (1971) and the USGA Women's Amateur (1978), and remains a true shot-maker's golf course that quietly outclasses its modest reputation.
