In September, Fritz was abandoned at our facility in the middle of the night. He was found early the following day tied to our building with just a shoestring, standing in a pool of his own blood. Thankfully, he received immediate care from our on-staff medical team, who discovered he was suffering from a prolapsed urethra. Throughout everything, he never once stopped wagging his tail and trying to lick his rescuers. We don't know who left Fritz tied up in the dark or how long he suffered before being abandoned. What we do know is that Fritz now feels and looks great. Just shortly after his recovery, Fritz was adopted into his forever home! That's what we do here at LHS: make tails wag again. But we can't do that without you and your support. Please help us continue to care for the thousands of dogs, cats, and other animals that look to us for help each year. Please donate to help save the animals we love so much.
In July, Good Samaritans found Willa Quinn severely underweight, infested with fleas, and with her eyes crusted shut. Our expert medical team learned that this sweet kitten suffered multiple medical issues, including an eye infection, URI, and tapeworms. Yet, with more than one close call to death while under our care, she found her will to live and finally made a turnaround. The expert care given to her by your LHS medical team saved Willa Quinn's life and continues to save others like her daily. Today, Willa Quinn is spoiled in her fur-ever home, gaining weight and confidence.
Meet our longest-term canine residents, Minnie, Ginny, Rambo, Diamond, and Pierce. Collectively, these pups have been waiting over 2,360 days to find their families. Sure, they have their quirks: Ginny and Diamond sing a little out of tune (okay, a lot out of tune); Rambo and Pierce don't share food; and Minnie is very particular about tennis balls. Because of their quirks, each of these dogs requires a special home, and we know the perfect match is out there. Until they find their forever homes, your LHS will shower them with all the love and attention they deserve.
Last October, Tick came to LHS with a shattered hind leg. Her owners had moved and abandoned her outside their house. While running from house to house, desperate to find her people, poor Tick was hit by a car. Our medical team made the difficult decision to amputate her leg in order to save her life. Tick was placed in foster care to recover, where she and her foster family instantly fell in love. Tick - so named for how she sticks to her mom - found her perfect forever home. Like so many animals that come through our doors, Tick had a heartbreaking journey, but she found her happy ending through foster care.
Thanks to our foster care program, over a thousand animals are given a second chance each year. They may come from broken backgrounds, but by spending time in foster homes, their wounds are healed and their spirits are mended. The pasts of these animals do not define them, and foster parents help rewrite their stories by loving them until they're adopted into their forever homes. And we can't forget you, our loyal supporters, who help ensure they have futures filled with love and happiness.
As part of Operation Dead End by Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), Belle was rescued from a decrepit trailer in Tennessee with dozens of other cats and dogs. When her rescuers arrived at the trailer, they found the cats living in small, feces and maggot-filled crates, and the dogs were loose inside and outside the trailer. Because of the unsanitary and inhumane conditions, the animals suffered from various medical issues, including broken bones, severe anemia, high ammonia exposure, mange, dental disease, overgrown nails, hair loss, ear and eye infections, and severe internal and external parasites. Belle's rescuers managed to extract all of the animals from their horrific conditions and transport them to trusted shelters like LHS. Because of your generosity, your Lexington Humane Society can work with amazing organizations like ARC to take in animals like Belle, give them the care and treatment they need, and find their forever homes.
Every month is a busy one at LHS. There are always animals in need of rescue. However, this past year has been exceptionally busy in our efforts to save animals near and far. Your LHS has been assisting animals in crisis across the country and helping those closer to home. This year, our team has rescued puppies from horrendous puppy mills in Iowa and Tennessee; taken in dogs from a failed shelter in Arkansas; pulled animals from hoarding cases in Alabama and Taylorsville, KY; rescued animals from natural disasters in Eastern and Western KY and Florida; and rescued Beagles from a mass breeding facility in Virginia. As you can see, the need is great, and the work is intense, but we will continue to do everything we can to help animals in need. These efforts are expensive, and your donations allow us to continue to save lives near and far.
