This is an ukiyo-e reproduction of one of Utagawa Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". With a beautiful contrast of red and white, Kinryuzan is the mountain name (title) of Sensoji Temple, and is based on the legend that a golden-scaled dragon descended here. The characters on the lantern read "Shinbashi" and were donated by believers in Shinbashi. All the snow on the screen is rendered using the "kurasuri" technique.
Edo woodblock prints began as simple black prints colored with a brush. These subsequently evolved into tan-e, beni-e, and urushi-e, eventually resulting in a printing technique in which colors were applied directly to the wood, followed by two- and three-color prints (benizuri-e). In 1765, it became possible to print intermediate colors as well as gold and silver, opening the door to multicolor prints.
