Pure Surfing Award and Legacy Award Honorees

Col Greg Martin

We are honored to present Col Martin with the JMMF Pure Surfing Award for his dedication and support of Ocean Therapy for Military Veterans mental and physical health. As commander of the Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendleton, Col Martin recognized the value of the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation's Ocean Therapy Surf Program as a therapeutic tool for Marines who had returned from combat with mental and physical wounds. As a surfer himself, Col Martin understood the inherent healing properties of the ocean so in 2008, partnering with the JMMF, Col Martin 'surfed' side by side with the men and women in his command; beginning with monthly JMMF Ocean Therapy sessions. The therapeutic effect on the Marines was profound and a second monthly session was added. To this day, JMMF continues to provide Ocean Therapy session for the Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendlleton. Col Martin retired from active duty in 2019 and is currently President of Warrior Foundation Freedom Station in San Diego. He continues his connection with JMMF with a surf program for the service members living in transitional housing provided by Warrior Foundation Freedom Station. Col Martin lives with his wife Rosie, in San Diego and enjoys traveling, fishing and playing with his grandchildren. He says this about his connections with JMMF: "I share the JMMF passion for helping others heal and deal through Ocean Therapy.  There are tens of thousands of Veterans who have not yet experienced the wonderful healing effects of the ocean. Thank God that JMMF and others like this are sharing the stoke!"

Liz and Scott Whitehead

We are honored to present Liz and Scott Whitehead with the JMMF Legacy Award for their undying support for the JMMF. Liz and Scott Whitehead were both born and raised in Manhattan Beach.  True locals, after attending Manhattan Beach elementary and middle schools, they graduated from Mira Costa High School, and chose to continue their South Bay legacy by raising their daughters in the community which they love so much.  Liz enjoys being a stay-at-home parent, and domestic goddess.  Scott is a partner in the boutique entertainment law firm McKuin Frankel Whitehead LLP.  After nearly 19 years of commuting to Beverly Hills, he now primarily works from home, only occasionally traveling to his office when necessary, which has expanded opportunities to enjoy the community they have chosen to call home.  The Whitehead family is grateful to the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation for continuing Jimmy's passion for surfing, with its culture of forming a supportive Ohana, and of course the therapeutic benefits that come with embracing the spiritually rejuvenating experience of time spent in the ocean.
