Description: Often, the natural beauty of Hermosa Beach is overshadowed by the bustling crowds, colorful storefronts, and frequent bacchanals on Pier Avenue. To me, the enigmatic pacific octopus embodies not only the incomparable beauty of our native marine life, but the spirit and history of music in Hermosa Beach. One passing through may miss the hidden wonders of our coasts, just as a casual listener may easily overlook brilliant music that deviates from the mainstream. This city and the surrounding bay have been the birthplace for countless voices in alternative music, many of whom defied the course of popular culture to carve their own niches. The thread binding them all has been the burning desire to create and make themselves heard. I've chosen to represent that drive with the electricity emanating from the drum sticks in this piece, instruments acting as mere conductors for an indomitable will.

Title: Peace, Love, and Music

Description: Eva A. is a high school sophomore from Hermosa Beach who is an artist and arts advocate. She has been creating original art since her early days of drawing outside the lines with Crayons. Today, she creates intricate pieces using pen, ink and paint to capture the world around her. She also channels her passion for the arts by continually learning about the history of jazz and playing in a local jazz combo. While creating Peace, Love, and Music, Eva listened to local jazz recordings from the Lighthouse, as well as punk and surf-rock by bands who were born in Hermosa Beach.

In addition, she is a passionate advocate for the arts, working as a volunteer for Indivisible Arts at Resin Gallery, serving on the Arts Justice Council for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), serving as a fellow with Arts for LA and is an alumni stakeholder for the Hermosa Beach City School District's Superintendent's Equity and Inclusion Committee. As she grows older, she hopes to continue utilizing her passion for the arts to change the world for the better.

Description: "Toro Toro Taxi" is the third of 3 pieces I made for the 2023 Boards Across Hermosa fundraiser for Indivisible Arts. It is probably the most personal of the boards I created, as it reflects my "Roller Girl" background. I skated all over town- to and from school, to the beach, to the Marina Del Rey Skatepark skatepark, where I had my first job. I remember skating down to Hermosa Beach because it was so cool to skate the base of the pier. This piece celebrates the Rock, Roll, Rebel: Hermosa theme with the Dire Straits song "Skateaway." This roller girl is a rebel, with her phones in tight and the music playing loud.

Skate culture originated in California thanks to the popularity of surfing, which originated in Hawaii. The background patterns were made using traditional Hawaiian kapa printing, tying skateboarding back to its roots in surfing.

Description: I grew up in Hermosa and listened to some blues and jazz at the Lighthouse. Hermosa always had so much music to offer. In the mid '70's punk rock was happening in Hermosa and the South Bay. Groups like Black Flag, The Descendants, The Circle Jerks, Redd Cross, The Minutemen and later on Pennywise, carried on defining what punk rock was all about.
I wanted to capture this energy that was felt by many of us during this exciting era of music and ideology.

Title: "Shadows grow under Darkening Skies"

Description: In keeping step with last years design I began brainstorming a new composition that should be completely opposite. I wanted to still convey imagery that would give a good narrative and would still respect the notion of the shows theme. I definitely wanted to give the piece some dimension and at the same time make a strong background showcasing my talents with respect to the classical style of training I posses. What the piece should do is pay homage to a few different niche category's of life that has graced the concrete and sand of Hermosa Beach. While also giving off a certain sense of nostalgia that I always try to preserve in anything I create.

Title: Tony Hawk

Description: This piece depicts Tony Hawk, the G.O.A.T. of skateboarding, at the time his career began as a teenager, on 20 attached skate decks in acrylic paint with neon led lights.

The world knows Tony Hawk as a legendary skateboarder, entrepreneur, and founder of The Skatepark Project - but how exactly did he get all those titles? Tony Hawk was nine years old when his older brother changed his life by giving him a blue fiberglass Bahne skateboard.

By 14 he'd turned pro, and by 16 was considered the best competitive skateboarder on earth. A World Champion for 12 years in a row, he continues to skate demos and exhibitions internationally, and remains the most recognized action-sports figure in the world.

His success may sound predestined, but it was more about passion and practice. "The first time I picked up a skateboard, I ran into the fence because I didn't know how to turn," he told Rolling Stone. At the X Games of 1999, he became the first skateboarder to ever land a 900, which was considered the holy grail of vert skateboarding at the time.

Become a connoisseur of cheap wine!

Each guest will bring 2 bottles of their favorite wine, wrapped in a brown paper bag. After everyone arrives, the host will give each guest a number, which will be written on both bags. One of the bags will be put away for later. The remaining bootle will be kept in the brown bag so no one knows whose it is and places it on the table. Guests will also bring a cheese they think pairs with their wine.

LET THE TASTING BEGIN!

Guests will be provided with a scorecard that lists the wines #1-how many are to be tasted. Everyone tastes the same wine at the same time, starting with wine #1. Guests will discuss the wine and cheese pairing and make notes and eventually select their favorite. The evening will wrap up when all wines have been tried and scored. Then, the wines are removed from the paper bags and everyone will find out how their wines were scored by the group. The winner gets to take home all the second bottles that were brought by each guest, or you can open right away to keep the party going. You can keep it light and casual, or "make things interesting" with a wager. Maybe the person whose wine scores the least amount of points is obligated to host and cater the next wine/cheese party!

Please join the third annual (skipped a few because of COVID) party/cocktail contest. It'll be an evening of delicious appetizers and sweets and little casual competition (is that even possible?) among friends. All in the form of a cocktail contest.

Up to 20 individuals/small teams (up to 3 people) will prepare a tequila cocktail with their favorite ingredients and give a short presentation on the contents of the drink, how it's made and anything else you'd like to share. (Non-alcoholic entries are also welcome). After all teams have presented, guests will sample the beverages and submit a vote.

Requirement-all ingredients must be homemade & with few exceptions. Hosts will make sure the competitors have all the info they need to be a master mixologist.
