Everybody but "Jack" Conroy was surprised that this overgrown blob of an airframe could even get off the ground, let alone operate quite efficiently, carrying NASA'S rockets in its oversized cargo hold. Built on the frame of a surplus Stratocruiser C-97, with an increase in length of 17ft. 8in. and an internal diameter of a whopping 19ft. 9in, it first flew in Sept. 1962. The Pregnant Guppy and the later Super Guppy, carried 85 percent of the Saturn and Apollo hardware, flying 11 of the lunar modules from manufacturers to launch sites. It could be said that the Guppy was actually the 'first stage" lift-off to the moon!
