DesChene graduated with an MFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art. Weary of the limitations placed on art by institutions, she began to invite audience participation into her installations. The outcome was a community collaborative exhibition titled WYSIWYG that has toured 11 different communities. Her recent collaborative work as PlantBot Genetics, with artist Jeff Schmuki has been awarded NEA and Pulitzer Foundation Grants. Due to racists and outdated laws in Canada her family has only recently been able to reclaim their indigenous status as part of the Métis Nation of Canada. As a large part of being a contemporary native person, is finding a path back to one's ancestors, future artworks will focus on the reclamation and reinvestigation on what it means to be indigenous. She is Professor of Painting at Auburn University.
