The Merida family tells their story with JourneyCare.

This year, JourneyCare welcomes the Merida Family as the 2021 Duck Race Honorary Chairs. Our nonprofit hospice and palliative care organization is deeply grateful for their support of our mission and pediatric All About Kids program.

Jennifer and Miguel Merida first learned about JourneyCare through a hospital social worker. Their newborn, Kaidence, was born with fluid on her brain. After an MRI, it was discovered that her brain did not grow past twelve weeks of gestation and the fluid was where the brain had not developed. With three other kids at home and both parents working full time, Jennifer and Miguel needed medical help with Kaidence and emotional support as a family.

The Meridas were able to take advantage of JourneyCare services: massage therapy, music therapy, Child Life Specialist, and one of the the in-patient facilities. JourneyCare helped them through four and half years of Kaidence's care needs, all in-line with Jennifer and Miguel's wishes for her care.. They faced many medical decisions throughout Kaidence's life, and the JourneyCare pediatric team helped the Meridas explore the facts and make difficult decisions, including signing medical orders for when Kaidence faced the end of her life. As Jennifer recalls, "Looking back, JourneyCare allowed me to love my baby girl. I was able to be a mommy to her and not a coordinator. You guys gave me time with her I could never get back."

"We couldn't have done it without JourneyCare," both parents say. When they reflect, Jennifer and Miguel agree that - while going through something so difficult - you are too close to fully see the larger picture. But JourneyCare connected them with nurses, doctors, and other families that provided vital support. As parents who were not accustomed to asking for help, they realized that the assistance provided by JourneyCare was a great comfort; families can connect with resources and solutions that they may not know exist. In the spirit of giving back, Miguel is now a JourneyCare volunteer helping families through some of the toughest times they face and hoping to spread awareness of pediatric care.

JourneyCare is deeply thankful to the Merida family for sharing their story and being here for JourneyCare today, so we can continue helping patients and families.

Greetings:

Please join us virtually as we celebrate the 28th JourneyCare Duck Race! Our plastic ducks will once again be racing down a water slide on August 7th at 4p.m.

All of the funds we raise go directly to JourneyCare's  "All About Kids" program, which provides specialized, compassionate care and support for children with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. From the time of diagnosis and throughout a family's journey, our goal is to provide the ultimate quality of life, respect and dignity, while honoring the uniqueness of each child and family.

Your support will help us ensure that these children and their families get the care and support they need and deserve, regardless of their ability to pay. No gift is too small.  Please consider doing what you can to make this an extra special event.

This year, we want to once again thank Lynda Bollman and our very own Youth Advisory Board for all of their efforts in making this event a success. Thank you.

We sincerely appreciate your support and please share this website with your family and friends, give us a like on social media and adopt a duck (or ten)!

 With much gratitude,
