Artist Bio:
Michael Hambouz (b. Niles, Michigan, 1977) is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, and independent curator based in Brooklyn, NY. Hambouz creates works commingling the familiar and otherworldly as observed in his dreams and daydreams, and exploring symbolic references to memories growing up the child of a displaced refugee in the rural Midwest. He experiments with process, mutations and rearticulations that result in abstracted paintings and prints, intricate paper cut outs, sculpture and animations.
Recent solo/two-person exhibitions include Future Fairs (New York, NY), Brooklyn Academy of Music (Brooklyn, NY), chashama (New York, NY), Kayrock (Brooklyn, NY), The Krasl Art Center (St. Joseph, MI), a 2018 survey exhibition at Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH), and 3S Artspace (Portsmouth, NH). He has participated in select group exhibitions at GROWROOM//SHOWROOM (Brooklyn, NY), Dominique Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Eve Leibe Gallery (London, UK), The National Arts Club (New York, NY), Andrew Edlin Gallery (New York, NY), IPCNY (New York, NY), and The Centre for Contemporary Printmaking, (Bangor, N. Ireland). Hambouz is an avid supporter of the arts and social justice, contributing work to benefit auctions hosted by Luhring Augustine, Cheim & Read, Bridget Donahue, Honey Ramka, Yossi Milo, and Pioneer Works. His art and curatorial work has been featured in Artnet News, Hyperallergic, Vice, Create! Magazine, and Design Milk.
