Disasters Don't Stop During the Holiday Season
A Year Beyond Compare

The unexpected has become a daily reality over the past several months, as seemingly nonstop disasters have left thousands of families displaced and in need of support.

While the West has grappled with devastating wildfires, Gulf Coast communities faced back-to-back hurricanes this year due to a record-setting, active Atlantic hurricane season. Families from coast to coast also continue to experience local disasters like home fires every day. Today, American Red Cross disaster workers are coming to the aid of people in need across the country, making sure they have food, a safe place to stay and other support through disasters big and small.

Already this year, the Red Cross has provided more than 1.2 million overnight stays in emergency lodging across the country - more than we've provided in any other year over the past decade - all while taking the necessary precautions and adapting our services to help ensure everyone's safety during the coronavirus pandemic.

As we enter the holiday season, families are still recovering from these unyielding disasters that have changed lives forever. In addition, people in communities across the country continue to cope with home fires, which can increase with colder weather and represent most of the more than 60,000 disasters that the Red Cross responds to each year.
