A Radioactive Selfie (Chernobyl, Ukraine, 2018)
It seems like an odd tourist destination, but as many as 400 visitors pay as much as $500 a day to spend time in Chernobyl, the site of the worst nuclear accident in history. This tourist brought his own mask and donned it around the area, including the abandoned worker city of Pripyat. Photographer Mike Hettwer, known for his science, archaeology and paleontology stories, has traveled to 90 countries, including this blighted section of Ukraine. This photo, featured in a 2020 issue of National Geographic, combines an optical camera image with a gamma radiation overlay in a novel process.
