Wayne Lawrence

Thriving in America (Detroit, Michigan, 2017)

This portrait of Iman Saleh, a journalism student at Wayne State University in Detroit, speaks volumes about how Muslims are part of the wonderful tapestry of American identity. Saleh's parents immigrated from Yemen. Wayne Lawrence, a St. Kitts-born, Brooklyn-based visual artist, took the portrait for a special 2018 National Geographic issue on diversity in America. The photo ran in an article entitled "How Muslims, Often Misunderstood, Are Thriving in America." According to National Geographic, Lawrence's work is "rooted in the documentary tradition" and "seeks to illuminate the complexities of human experience."
