Making Way for a Sea Lion (Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, 2015)

This image of a Galápagos Island sea lion chasing a school of Salema fish is breathtaking. The photographer is Enric Sala of Catalonia, Spain, a former university professor specializing in marine conservation ecology who suddenly realized that he was "writing the obituary" of sea life instead of protecting it. He quit his job and in 2008 became a full-time conservationist as a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, and launched the Pristine Seas project to explore and protect the ocean. In 2015, the expedition went to the Galápagos to learn more about the islands' marine ecology. Soon after, he met with the Ecuadorian president to discuss the need for greater conservation. The president then announced a vast new marine sanctuary there. "Ecuador has shown tremendous leadership by protecting one of the most globally valuable places in the ocean," Sala said.
