Alfred Eisenstaedt

Swan Lake Rehearsal at the Paris Opera (Paris, France, 1930)

In 1932, acclaimed photojournalist Alfred Eisenstaedt was first getting recognized as one of the best in the business. He may be best known for the iconic image of a woman kissing a sailor in Times Square on V-J Day. He was born in West Prussia, studied in Berlin and served in the German army in World War I. In this elegant photo, he brings to life the intensity of Paris Opera House ballerinas who are listening to the ballet master in a rehearsal of "Swan Lake." Eisenstaedt was a full-time photojournalist in Europe from 1929-35, before coming to the U.S. In 1936, he was hired as one of the original staff photographers of LIFE magazine, where he worked for 40 years, earning a reputation as one of the masters of his field.
