James P. Blair
March for Freedom (Washington, DC, 1963)
In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In his hand is his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Attended by some 250,000 people, it was the largest demonstration in DC and one of the first to be widely televised. Award-winning photojournalist James P. Blair, who was a staff photographer at National Geographic from 1962-1994, took this image of King on this historic day. Blair has had more than 2,000 photos published in National Geographic.
