Follow the Light In Loving Memory of Larry "Flame" Moore

The 2019 FTL Awards Celebration

On Thursday, September 12th, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm, the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center will host the rebirth of the Follow the Light Surf Photography Grant Program in Loving Memory of Larry "Flame" Moore at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor.

The 2019 FTL Program has seen more than 90 entries from around the world from surf photographers between the ages of 16-25.

In keeping with tradition, our judging panel of professional surf photographers and past winners has reviewed every submission and selected our five finalists who will all be on hand:

  • Shane Grace, 25, Haleiwa, HI @shanegracey
  • Nick Green, 23, Hobart, Tasmania Australia @nickgreenphoto
  • Paul Greene, 23, Santa Barbara, CA @paulgreene
  • Ryan Mack, 24, Brick Township, NJ @ryanmackphoto
  • Nolan Sullivan, 20, Goleta, CA @tooth_massage

Each of the five will have an opportunity to present their work, and the panel will award $5,000 to the Grand Prize winner.

In addition, each finalist will receive $1,000, and the People's Choice, selected by the audience on the night of the ceremony, will walk away with a new Aquatech water housing.

This is a rare opportunity to meet the next generation of surf photographers in a spectacular setting, and all in support of a great cause.

Beer, Wine and Hors de Oeuvres will be served.

Your ticket includes an individual membership to the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center

Follow the Light

Shortly after legendary surf photographer and 30-year photo editor of SURFING Magazine Larry "Flame" Moore's passing in October 2005 a group of friends and family formed the "Follow the Light" Surf Photography Grant Program to ensure that Flame's legacy of passionately supporting up-and-coming surf photographers continued.

FTL dedicated itself to honoring this next generation through an annual grant program that also included an awards presentation ceremony highlighting the work of each of the five finalists.

Running from 2006 to 2015, "FTL" brought together our community of surf media and industry professionals, athletes, and friends to recognize each year's winner.

In 2017 the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (shacc.org) was asked by Flame's family to be the steward of "Follow the Light." The board of SHACC agreed and the "Follow the Light" grant program has officially relaunched

A global call for entries has been issued, and the awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 12th, at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California.

In addition to the grant of $5,000 to the winning photographer, and $1,000 to each of the runners up, FTL has worked with key brand partners to secure working opportunities for our five finalists

All finalists' work will be on display at SHACC in a permanent FTL section that is being created in the museum.
