Juana Martinez-Neal created this image for Nestlé as a part of "El Mejor Nido," their bi-lingual summer reading program. It shows a young bird named Poppy leaving the nest for her first day of school. Martinez-Neal combines collage and acrylic paint; the red leaves at the bottom of the image are brought to life by wrinkles in the paper.
Martinez-Neal won a Caldecott Honor for her picture book Alma and How She Got her Name (2018). Her book La Princesa and the Pea (2017), written by Susan M. Elya, was awarded the 2018 Pura Belpré Illustrator Award. The Pura Belpré Award is co-sponsored by REFORMA, this year's Carle Honors Angel. Martinez-Neal's work will be featured at The Carle in the exhibition Now and Then: Contemporary Illustrators and their Childhood Art, opening December 14, 2019.
All proceeds benefit The Carle's mission to instill a love of art and reading through picture books.
Artwork is framed by R. Michelson Galleries using archival materials.
Winners can take their artwork immediately after The Carle Honors. Absentee winners will receive their artwork via Federal Express; a flat shipping fee of $150 per artwork will apply.
