Of his many awards, Carle holds honorary degrees from eight colleges and won the Japan Picture Book Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000. The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been translated into 65 languages and has sold 50 million copies. Her book Girls Standing on Lawns (2014) is a hybrid of photographs, paintings, and prose, and considers the elegance and absurdity of women traditionally photographed while posing in the grass. Girls Standing on Lawns is one of a three-part collaboration between Kalman, author Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket), and the Museum of Modern Art.Kalman has written and illustrated 18 children's books. In 2016 she won the AIGA Medal for "brilliantly merging the worlds of storytelling, illustration, and design while pushing the limits of all three." These are the protagonists of the acclaimed graphic novel series Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi. Kibuishi made this drawing especially for the 2019 Carle Honors. It is based on the final scene in the series' first installment, Amulet: The Stonekeeper (2008).Amulet: The Stonekeeper is an ALA Best Book for Young Adults (2009). Kibuishi's series Flight Volume 2 was nominated for the 2006 Eisner Award for Best Anthology. RansomeIn this scene from Before There Was Mozart, James E. Ransome depicts France's King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette listening to Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George play his violin. Born on a plantation in Guadeloupe to a black slave and her white master, Joseph became a professional violinist. He conducted the orchestra Les Amateurs, became the queen's personal music instructor, and wrote concertos, symphonies, string quartets, and operas. Ransome spent a full year painting the book's images, and traveled to both Guadeloupe and Paris with his wife and collaborator, Lesa Cline-Ransome, for research.Ransome received the 1995 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award and the IBBY Honor Award for his book The Creation (1994). He won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for Before She Was Harriet: The Story of Harriet Tubman (2017). The image originally appeared on the cover of TV Guide in 1978 to celebrate the shared 50th birthdays of Maurice Sendak and Mickey Mouse. In the magazine, Sendak shared his childhood memories of seeing Mickey on television, his collection of Mickey Mouse memorabilia, and his dream of working for Disney. About their shared birthday celebration, Sendak said, "I am six months older than [Mickey] is, but he looks a good deal younger than I do!"Sendak illustrated more than 100 books during his prolific 60-year career. His many awards include the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are (1963), the 1970 Hans Christian Anderson Award for lifetime achievement, and the first ever Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2003. Taking inspiration from Keat's book The Snowy Day (1962), Tonatiuh designed the mural to resemble a pre-Columbian codex set in contemporary Brooklyn. He represents symbols of indigenous groups, like the Huichol Ojo de Dios at the center, where four children of different ethnicities face the four cardinal directions. The text comes from letters Tonatiuh received from 2nd and 3rd graders about their favorite winter activities.Tonatiuh's many awards include the Sibert Medal, the Américas Award, the 2012 Pura Belpré Illustrator Award, multiple Pura Belpré Illustrator Honors, and one Pura Belpré Author Honor.
