In this recent unpublished collage, the star of Eric Carle's beloved book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), holds a fish in his chopsticks with a bottle of sake nearby! Carle and his wife Bobbie were inspired by this year's Bridge, Chihiro Art Museum, and several other Japanese museums to found The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in 2002.
Carle has written and illustrated more than 70 books. Of his many awards, Carle holds honorary degrees from eight colleges and won the Japan Picture Book Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000. The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been translated into 65 languages and has sold 50 million copies. The exhibition Under the Sea with Eric Carle is currently on view at The Carle through March 1, 2020.
All proceeds benefit The Carle's mission to instill a love of art and reading through picture books.
Artwork is framed by R. Michelson Galleries using archival materials.
Winners can take their artwork immediately after The Carle Honors. Absentee winners will receive their artwork via Federal Express; a flat shipping fee of $150 per artwork will apply.
