2019 Honoree: Sol Kumin

 


Sol Kumin has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for the past 5 years and is principally focused on racing. He has ownership interests in 100 horses-some on his own-- and others in partnership with a few close friends. These horses run under different stable names which are associated with places in Nantucket, MA: Madaket Stables, Head of Plains Partners, Sheep Pond Partners, and Monomoy Stables.

During his racing career, Kumin has had over 50 Grade 1 winners in the US. His international career wins include: the Grade 1 Royal Jubilee at Royal Ascot with Undrafted, and the Grade 1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai-twice-- with Mind Your Biscuits.

In 2018, his best year ever, he led the country with 24 Grade 1 wins and over 50 graded stake wins. He became the first owner, since Calumet Farm did it in 1950, to win the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby in the same year with Monomoy Girl and Justify. He won the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, with Justify, which completed the 2018 Triple Crown!

To date, Kumin has won four Eclipse Awards (Justify-twice--, Lady Eli, Monomoy Girl) and three Breeders Cup wins with Lady Eli, Monomoy Girl, and Wavell Avenue. Some of his Grade 1 winners include: A Raving Beauty, Ascend, Audible, Beach Patrol, Bowie's Hero, Catholic Boy, Decked Out, Exaggerator, Fatale Bere, Justify, Lady Eli, Long on Value, Mia Mischief, Midnight Bisou, Mind Control, Monomoy Girl, Sharla Rae, She's a Julie, Slumber, Undrafted, Wavell Avenue, Whitmore, World of Trouble, Ya Primo, and Yoshida.


Kumin is the Chief Strategic Officer of Leucadia Asset Management LLC. Prior to Leucadia, he was CEO of Folger Hill Asset Management, which he merged with Schonfeld Securities in 2018. He serves on multiple boards including Starwood Property Trust ("STWD"), Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, the Fessenden School in Newton, MA, the Trust Board at Boston Children's Hospital, and Team Impact. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the US Lacrosse Foundation Board and as a member of the Johns Hopkins Lacrosse Advisory Board.

Sol lives in Boston, Massachusetts with his wife, Elizabeth, and their three young children. He holds a BA in political science from Johns Hopkins University.
