The Survivor Stroll

From silence to visibility. From surviving to thriving.

In the 1920s, domestic violence was largely hidden behind closed doors-rarely discussed publicly, rarely recognized as a community issue, and too often treated as a private matter. Women had few legal, financial, or social protections, and speaking openly about abuse could carry enormous consequences.

Today, we know better.

Domestic violence is not a private problem. It is a community issue. Survivors deserve safety, support, dignity, and choices-and creating safer communities requires all of us.

The Survivor Stroll brings that journey into downtown Salt Lake City.

On Broadway, survivors, supporters, advocates, businesses, and community members will come together to make domestic violence impossible to ignore.

Part public art experience, part awareness campaign, and part celebration, The Survivor Stroll is entirely about bringing the conversation into the open.

From the shadows to the spotlight.

The Survivor Stroll invites participants to walk through nearly a century of change.

Along the route, artwork and messages explore how our understanding of domestic violence has evolved-from silence and stigma to advocacy, awareness, resources, and survivor-centered support.

We begin in a time when abuse was hidden. We move through decades of changing attitudes and hard-won progress. And we arrive in the present-where survivors are speaking, communities are listening, and people are working toward a future free from violence.

The goal isn't to dwell on the past. It's to recognize how far we've come-and how much further we can go.

Whether you have experienced domestic violence, supported someone you love, work in the field, or simply want to help create safer communities, there is a place for you at The Survivor Stroll.

Come walk. Come listen. Come learn. Come celebrate.

You don't need to share a personal story or be an expert to participate. You simply need to believe that people deserve to be safe in their homes, relationships, and communities.

A public conversation about a private reality

Domestic violence affects people across every community, background, age, and socioeconomic group. Yet stigma, fear, and misunderstanding can still keep people from seeking help.

That's why visibility matters.

By gathering on Broadway, we transform a familiar city street into a place for reflection, education, connection, and hope-and send a powerful message: Domestic violence belongs in the light.

The artwork invites people to stop and think. The stories invite people to listen. And the presence of survivors and supporters reminds us that change happens when communities show up.

Survivors are more than what happened to them. They are parents, children, friends, neighbors, coworkers, artists, leaders, dreamers, and community members.

Celebrate progress. Continue the work.

The Survivor Stroll is not a celebration of domestic violence. It is a celebration of survivors, progress, and a community increasingly willing to confront violence rather than hide it.
