1"Tumbang Preso" (toom-BAHNG PREH-so), meaning "fallen prisoner," was a cherished childhood game that consumed hours of our days-until sunset or until someone got hurt. Fiercely competitive, it remains a vivid part of my youth and inspires this painting, where I explore the intersections of memory, identity, and cultural history through a personal lens.
Though its exact origins are unclear, Tumbang Preso is believed to have emerged during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, shaped by both indigenous traditions and colonial influence. In this work, I center the condensed milk can we favored for its sturdy form-often a "Liberty Condensada" tin, branded with imagery that reflects colonial ideals of beauty. The game also relied on tsinelas (slippers), another colonial-era introduction that came to symbolize social status. These everyday objects, once part of play, now carry layered meanings-serving as quiet markers of history, resilience, and the complexities of cultural inheritance.
