This character-filled slab of black walnut has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind legacy bench, stabilized with handcrafted butterfly bowtie inlays made from the storied hedges of Sanford Stadium. Originally planted in 1929 and reinstalled after the 1996 Olympic Games, these historic privet hedges framed the field of play for 27 seasons as Georgia Bulldogs football compiled a remarkable 280-90 record. Their wood now lives on in this piece, preserving a small part of Georgia football history. In many ways, the study of politics is the study of how institutions hold together imperfect human systems. This bench reflects that idea in wood-its hedge bowties strengthening the walnut slab while honoring the 25th Anniversary of the University of Georgia's School of Public & International Affairs (SPIA) and its enduring study of the institutions that shape civic life. The bench was handcrafted by Ronny Just, an avid Bulldogs fan and an Emeritus Member of the SPIA Board of Visitors. Before retiring in 2023, Ronny served as Governmental Relations Manager for Georgia Power for nearly 38 years. He lives in Athens with his wife, Kim, and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and pursuing his passion for woodworking.
