Saving Lives with New Smoke Alarms

Every day in the U.S., eight people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms, which low-income households, African Americans and older Americans disproportionately killed and/or injured. If you have working smoke alarms, your chance of survival increases by more than 50 percent.

Many homes lack working smoke alarms, and these families need our help. To support this critical need, Red Cross volunteers and community partners canvass neighborhoods throughout the year to install hundreds of free smoke alarms and teach residents about fire safety.

To better serve people in need, we have invested in updated smoke alarms with new technology that's both more sensitive to fires and less likely to trigger false alarms for issues that aren't flaming fires - such as cooking smoke.

The Western New York Region aims to raise funds for approximately 4,200 smoke alarms this year, at a cost of $17 per alarm. This $71,343 goal will help to make hundreds of local homes safer by providing free smoke alarm installations as well as home fire safety education.  Financial donations toward this project will support installation of up to four tamper-resistant smoke alarms per home. Each alarm is designed to last up to 10 years.
