Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Auction Party?
The Auction is our single largest fundraising event for Captain's PTO and always a fun opportunity to mingle with other parents and staff at a special, off-campus venue. The annual event features delicious food, drink and unique entertainment while raising support for the students and staff of Captain Elementary.
What can I expect while I'm there?
Expect a party! We're pairing a Las Vegas-style casino with a cocktail-style reception. Move and socialize freely during our event, play games and bid competitively for auction items all in the name of a good cause.
Help, I don't really know how to gamble. Should I come?
Don't know to gamble? Perfect. Neither do half the people who will be there.
This isn't "risk your rent money" - it's play-money and dramatic cheering for your friends while they pretend to know how blackjack works. Everyone receives $250 in fake money at the door, additional buy-in is optional. Come for the vibes, the outfits and the cause. The only real risk? Having a surprisingly great time.
Wait! I want to actually learn!
We've got you. Our professional dealers are entertaining and love to teach. Here's a quick cheat sheet so you can walk in the door with confidence:
- Blackjack: Get as close to 21 as possible without going over. Go over 21? You bust. Under 21 but closer than the dealer? You win. Exactly 21 with your first two cards? That's blackjack.
- 3 Card Poker: This is poker for people who like their drama fast. You get three cards. The dealer gets three cards. No long speeches, no bluffing. You can fold (walk away) or play (match your bet and see what unfolds).
- Roulette: Spin the wheel and hope the tiny ball likes you. You place your chips on what you believe in (a number, a color, odds or evens). The dealer spins the wheel. The ball bounces around dramatically. If it lands on what you picked, you win. If not, better luck next time.
- Craps: Craps is "cheer for dice like they can hear you." The shooter rolls two dice. You can bet on the shooter (the person rolling) to win or bet against them if you enjoy tension. First roll: 7 or 11 = yay. 2, 3, or 12 = oof. Anything else becomes "the point." Then they roll again. Hit the point before a 7? You win. Roll a 7 first? The table dramatically sighs. It's loud, it's chaotic, and no one fully knows what's happening - but we're all very enthusiastic about it!
Who should attend?
Teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, friends and family -- all those 21+ are welcome.
What should I wear?
In Vegas, looking the part is half the fun! We'd love to see creative cocktail attire, upscale and trendy nightclub vibes, glittery statement outfits, and even a themed bachelorette party or two. In the end, Vegas isn't one-size-fits-all, and neither is your outfit. No one will be turned away at the door!
Can I donate an auction item?
Yes! To explore making a tax-deductible donation, please contact us at [email protected].
What if I can't attend, but still want to participate?
Bidding for our silent auction is open to all Captain Cougars' supporters, whether you'll be joining us in person or not. As long as you're a registered GiveSmart user you can start bidding on your favorite items as soon as they go live. Bidding will close on March 7 during our event. If you're not there to accept your auction item in person, we'll have it at the Captain front office for pick up the following week.
