ABOUT BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK:

Blessings in a Backpack is a national organization made up of seven regional chapters and more than 1,000 volunteer-driven programs. Our mission is simple: we provide food on the weekends for school-aged children who might otherwise go hungry.

The Chicago Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack works to prevent childhood hunger on the weekends across Chicagoland. Nearly 600,000 kids living in Chicagoland are food insecure. One in seven kids receives subsidized meals during the week but is without affordable, healthy food on Saturday and Sunday. We close this gap by providing nutritionally balanced foods, sent home in kids' backpacks every Friday. As a result, these kids have fewer health problems, longer attention spans, and perform better in school.

During the 2024/25 school year, the Chicago Chapter has provided more than 6,000 school-aged children with hunger-free weekends. We currently have 1,400 volunteers that serve 96 schools, providing 220,000 hunger-free weekends.
