The U. S. government agreed to construct the lighthouse at Grosse Point after several maritime disasters, including the sinking of the Lady Elgin, showed need for it. The Italianate building was designed by General Orlando Metcalf Poe, Chief Engineer of this lighthouse district, who designed and oversaw construction of eight "Poe style lighthouses" along the Great Lakes. This original 16 x 20 print is matted, framed, signed by the artist and comes with a certificate noting its inclusion in the exhibit.
