HONORING
John Lee
Councilmember John Lee is a lifelong public servant, the son of Korean immigrants, and a resident of Council District 12 for over 40 years. He has dedicated his career to the City of Los Angeles and was first elected to serve as Councilmember for the Twelfth District of Los Angeles in a Special Election in 2019. He was elected to his first full term in 2020 and was re-elected in 2024. John's priorities for Council District 12 and its residents are to increase public safety, support local businesses, deliver core city services and bring quality of life improvements to the community.
Councilmember Lee found his calling for public service at an early age when he first began volunteering for local non-profits while in middle school. After finishing school, John committed his life's work to giving back to the community that raised him. Through his work for over two decades in city government, he has gained an extensive understanding of the City's legislative and budget processes and day-to-day operations, giving him tremendous insight into what works and what doesn't at City Hall. During his time in office, Councilmember Lee has prioritized initiatives that support the city's first responders, utilized public-private partnerships to expand the reach of local organizations, and remains the Council's uniquely independent voice on a myriad of issues.
John currently serves as the chair of the Public Safety Committee, vice chair of the Government Operations Committee, and is a member of the Planning and Land Use Management Committee, the Rules, Elections, and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, and the Ad Hoc Committee on Unarmed Crisis Prevention, Intervention, and Community Services.
Councilmember Lee lives in Porter Ranch with his wife Sheila, their two children, Jayda and Jackson, and their rescue dog, Macky.
Terrance Turner
Terrance Turner arrived at Rancho San Antonio Boys Home at the age of 17-a young man carrying the weight of trauma, disconnection, and loss. Estranged from his family and shaped by the violence he had witnessed, including the tragic shooting of a close friend, Terrance faced an uncertain future.
At Rancho San Antonio, Terrance found the support and encouragement he needed to rediscover his potential. With a natural passion for the culinary arts, he was empowered to pursue his dream of becoming a chef and began to build a path forward. He started with a job at a local dessert shop, where his dedication and leadership quickly earned him the role of Assistant Manager. Drawing on this experience, he soon secured a position as a chef's assistant at an upscale restaurant.
Terrance's talent, work ethic, and determination set him apart. Within a year, he rose to the position of chef-and continued to juggle multiple responsibilities, including part-time roles at both the dessert shop and Rancho's own kitchen. His culinary journey accelerated when he was promoted to head chef and invited to relocate to help open a new restaurant location in Texas.
Today, Terrance lives in Texas, where he continues to thrive professionally and personally. He has built a successful career as a chef-traveling the world to open restaurants and most recently training in Tokyo. He has also healed his relationship with his father, a testament to his growth and resilience.
Terrance Turner is a shining example of what is possible when a young person is given support, opportunity, and the space to believe in themselves. We are proud to honor him for his achievements, leadership, and the powerful story of transformation he represents.
