Coming SoonABOUT BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK SOUTH LYON:
Blessings in a Backpack- South Lyon is a FREE "neighbor-helping-neighbor" program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children and families. The South Lyon chapter is 100% volunteer-run. For the past 10 years, we have been providing weekend and summer food to at-risk students in the South Lyon School District.
This past year, our numbers almost doubled and with food costs on the rise, we need your help more than ever!
While it seems unlikely the children in an affluent county like Oakland would go to bed hungry on weekends, in reality, 14.3% of South Lyon students are at risk. South Lyon has nearly 1,200 children who qualify for this program. The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success. The South Lyon program is currently serving all schools in the district, including 8 elementary schools, both middle schools and high schools and the Early Childhood Center. We serve approximately 500 children!
Research shows that healthy, well-nourished children learn better, are more likely to attend school and are able to take advantage of educational opportunities. This program is making a difference in the lives of children.
Results we have seen are:
Test Scores Improved 45-54%
Increased Attendance 23-48%
Greater Attention Spans 25-35%
Improved Class Atmosphere 35-44%
We hope you will join us on Saturday, May 31, at Tanglewood Golf Club for the 2025 Blessings in a Backpack South Lyon Golf Outing where all proceeds go directly to purchasing food for the students in our program.
