Now's your chance with the Homeless Shelter Shopping Initiative.
Founded in 2018, the Homeless Shelter Shopping Initiative is a dedicated group of volunteers from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark on a mission to provide new clothing and essential household items to homeless New Jersey residents.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP...
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark provides emergency, transitional, and permanent housing in 12 facilities for New Jerseyans who have no other place to go. We welcome them with warmth and compassion, provide basic needs like clothing, towels, bedding, etc., and give them access to comprehensive wrap-around services.
But meeting the needs of our shelter residents and those suffering from housing insecurity continues to be challenging. We can't do it without the generosity of others!
"Homelessness in New Jersey has climbed 24% since last year (2023), a trend advocates attributed to an entrenched affordable housing shortage made worse by rising rents and shrinking vacancies. Advocates counted 12,680 people - representing 9,148 households - who were living in shelters, hotels and motels, safe-haven programs, transitional housing, and on the street during their annual assessment, which was done this year on Jan. 23. That's about 2,400 more than they counted last year and continues an upward swing that started in 2021." reported the New Jersey Monitor.
Fortunately, last year, Catholic Charities was able to provide 208,000 nights of shelter and 204,000 plus meals for children, women, men, seniors, veterans, and those with HIV. With your generous help, we can do even more this year!
HOW THE SHOPPING INITIATIVE WORKS
We raise money from generous and caring friends in our community like you.
Donations are collected and totaled which will determine how much our volunteers can purchase for our shelters. Our focus is on the essentials like Bedding/Warm Blankets & Linens, Cleaning supplies, Warm Clothing (Undergarments, Coats, Boots, Hats, Mittens), Electronics, Kitchen Items, Toiletries, and more.
On the shopping day, our volunteers meet at Walmart in Linden, NJ (date/time to be determined). Volunteers shop together for items throughout Walmart.
Volunteers purchase items with funds raised from this initiative. Purchases are packed up in vehicles and volunteers deliver items to shelters and our other facilities.
