Australian author and illustrator, Graeme Base, wrote an environmentally-focused play titled Sign of the Seahorse. These tongue twisting stanzas and audibly pleasing wordplay is a favorite with the kids. While the focus is on the dangers of an oil spill on a coral reef and the effects on its inhabitants, this book also teaches well the distinct parts of a play. The aquatic characters are bigger than life and are woven in and out of each scene. There is drama and danger with the "gang of sharks" ready to move an owner of a music and eating venue away from his life's work and his daughter's inheritance. The author cleverly leaves clues - and ultimately the main characters to safety - by following the sign of the seahorse and its trail. Physical illness and a blight on the reef brings reinforcements from a regiment of crabs. Balance and health are restored to the coral reef, along with special relationships. The students not only have parts they can speak aloud as a chorus, but specific stage directions and sound effects are liberally sprinkled throughout the acts of this play.
