In the SEARCH classroom, students engage in authentic, hands-on lessons that develop skills in self-directed learning, critical thinking, inductive and deductive thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and communication. The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery by Graeme Base provides such an in-depth lesson opportunity. Students are asked to solve a by following the clues that are hidden in the very detailed and elaborate illustrations. The puzzles are both challenging and engaging.
Students are asked to use critical thinking as they work through wordplay, which includes puns, idioms and ambiguous language. Deductive thinking is required as students collaborate using teamwork and problem-solving to piece together the clues and solve the mystery.
It would be wonderful to have enough copies for students to share with just one other student as they closely examine the clues. Currently, snapshots are of the pages are used which can be a bit fuzzy and distorted.
GT Tenets used: Productive Thinking, Global Awareness, Problem-solving, Communication and Collaboration.
