About Us
Established in 1881, The Convent of the Sacred Heart School on 91st Street is New York City's oldest independent school for girls. The school was originally housed in a brownstone on Madison Avenue at 54th Street. By the 1930s the school had outgrown the Madison Avenue location and moved into the Otto Kahn Mansion on East 91st Street; in 1940 the Society of the Sacred Heart acquired the building next door, the James Burden Mansion. In 2014, the school opened the Athletics and Wellness Center, a state-of-the-art, 60,000-square foot facility at 406 East 91st Street. In 2023, the school completed FutureLab, which renovated and expanded spaces devoted to technology and science. The transformative project included the creation of two makerspaces, a digital media studio, research labs, and a new Atrium connecting the two original mansions.
As part of a worldwide network of over 150 Sacred Heart schools in 44 countries, with 25 in the United States and Canada, 91st Street shares a rich heritage dating back to 1801, when Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the first Sacred Heart school in France. Her vision of educating young women to transform the world gave rise to Sacred Heart's educational mission that, more than 200 years later, continues to guide and inspire all Sacred Heart Schools. Today, 91st Street is a vibrant, mission-driven community that empowers each young woman to share her passion and purpose as she builds a life of joy and meaning.
