Thank you for supporting this year's event. The Auction is the joint effort of numerous members of the law school community. While the people who have made this event possible are too numerous to mention individually, we would especially like to thank the faculty, staff, and members of the Public Interest Law Group (PILG) for the time, effort, and resources devoted to making this event a success.
The proceeds from tonight support the Irvin & Maggie Dagen Fellowship Fund, which provides summer stipends to students working in unpaid public interest and public service work. The late Irvin and Maggie Dagen were leaders in the civil rights movement in St. Louis and generous supporters of SLU LAW. They helped integrate downtown St. Louis lunch counters in the 1950s and 1960s by going into the establishments, ordering lunch, and then, when their meal came, giving up their seat to an African American person who would not have been allowed to order.
Mr. Dagen, a SLU LAW alum, died in 1998, while Mrs. Dagen died in 2002. They generously remembered the law school before and after their deaths. Shortly before her death, Mrs. Dagen met with PILG students who had completed summer internships thanks to her generous donation. She was so moved by the students' dedication that she created an endowment that permanently supplies the funds for the Dagen Fellowship each summer, supplemented by the proceeds of the Auction.
For the past forty years, and as a direct result of the support of the generous donors and guests here with us tonight, PILG has provided summer fellowships to students working in otherwise unpaid public interest and public service programs. These fellowships have allowed SLU LAW students to aid underfunded and overstretched public interest agencies throughout the country. Last year, the support of the SLU LAW administration, faculty, staff, and student body enabled us to fund fellowships for more than forty-five students, all of whom dedicated their time and talents to serving underrepresented populations.
We would like to express our appreciation for all the students, faculty, administration, alumni, and staff who have so graciously supported PILG's efforts throughout our forty years of hosting the Auction. Most especially, we thank you for joining us as we celebrate our community's continued commitment to support public interest work.
