We're honored to share Becki's story.

It was an unexpected diagnosis for a woman in her early 30s, and in those first few weeks in Summer 2022, there were a lot of tears. "I cried during the biopsy, diagnosis, and initial appointments with my doctors," said Becki. "I was so scared. I didn't know anyone my age who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and I had no understanding of what was going to happen."

Although she had incredible support from family and friends, Becki wanted to connect with people who had breast cancer and could tell her what to expect. A nurse referred her to Cancer Support Community in Northern Arizona, noting that we offered a weekly in-person Breast Cancer Support Group. Becki joined us soon after, and was welcomed warmly by the group, which included newly diagnosed patients like her and those who had survived breast cancer for many years.

The group has been an important aspect of dealing with her diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, Becki said. "In the Breast Cancer Support Group, there is no topic that is off-limits," she said. "We're all there to offer guidance, to lean onto each other during the challenges, and to be cheerleaders to celebrate each other's win!"

That included Becki's own celebration of her one-year "cancerversary" last summer. Becki has also participated in many of the other programs offered at Cancer Support Community in Northern Arizona, from informative virtual sessions on topics like cancer-related fatigue to in-person expressive arts and healing circles.

"I truly cannot imagine having gone through my diagnosis and active treatment without having Cancer Support Community in Flagstaff," she said.

#CommunityIsStrongerThanCancer

Cancer Support Community Arizona's (CSCAZ) mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

Our services are crucial because, while cancer patients typically receive state-of-the-art medical treatment, effective cancer care also requires the integration of psychological and social services to identify and address issues associated with a cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

Our programs are for anyone impacted by cancer, any diagnosis at any stage and include support groups, healthy lifestyle programs, education presentations, social connections, and resources & referrals, including our Direct Assistance Fund to help with out-of-pocket treatment expenses to ensure continuity of care.

OCredit for Contributions to Qualifying Charitable OrganizationsO
