Title: Lined Mortar and Pestle

Materials: Flame treated maple

Dimensions: 6.5" x 4" x 2"

Description of the Piece: The Ten Lined June Beetle is a native of the Pacific Northwest. People recall summers of chasing these beetles, affectionately nicknamed watermelon bugs. While not endangered, they represent fleeting memories of childhood and times of the past. When threatened, this beetle raises its back and pushes air through its wings to make a hissing sound reminiscent of noises from mortar and pestles.

Artist Bio: Midori is a junior pursuing Industrial Design at Carnegie Mellon inspired by the natural world and the opportunity to use design to enhance human relationships and connections with the world around us.
