Artist: Tassaduq Sohail

Pakistani artist and short-story writer Tassaduq Sohail created searingly satirical paintings critical of humankind's follies while also venerating animals and nature. In 1961 Sohail moved to London, where he worked menial jobs while drawing whenever possible and creating a body of work using the decalcomania technique-propagated by artists such as Max Ernst-in which ink is spread onto glass and covered with a paper while still wet. His work began to gain attention with a 1978 exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. Sohail later produced oil paintings on a larger scale, exploring sexuality, avarice, and freedom in narrative scenes often inspired by Persian poetry and hikayat fables. His works are in the collections of the Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Arts Council Collection.
