FUND-A-CAUSE - THE RECESS PROJECT
At Gardner Bullis, we are fortunate to be located among the rolling hills and lush trees of Los Altos Hills. Recess is a favorite time for children, as it allows free activity, active movement, a break to counterbalance sedentary time during classwork as well as the development of social and emotional skills.
Our school has unique supervisory challenges during recess due to the three levels of our campus - the lower and upper blacktops and the upper field. During lunchtime recess there are two adults supervising - one at the lunch tables and one to oversee the lower and upper blacktop areas. Without additional staff or volunteers, the upper field is not available for students to play during recess. Students use the lower and upper blacktop areas to play football, soccer, gaga ball, four square, basketball, tag and everything else in between.
With your support, we can make substantial improvements to lunchtime recess for our children. We would increase adult supervision during lunchtime. This additional supervision would mean that the grass field would be open for lunchtime recess and students could participate in fun games and sports. The grass surface not only allows all children more space to play but also a safer surface to play on. On a warm, sunny day, grass fields are around 90-95F while temperatures on asphalt can get as hot as 140F.
In addition to increased supervision, the field will be resurfaced to prevent injuries. We would add a set of soccer nets, recess equipment and storage for easy access and cleanup.
Together, we can improve recess safety for our children during recess and enhance our campus for years to come.
