This painting, with its unique frame, has a connection to USD. Dr. Leonard Mead was an early director of the Human Services Center, formerly the South Dakota Hospital for the Insane. In the 1890s Dr. Mead conceived the plan to create an environment that would be therapeutically beneficial to the patients. To implement that plan, Dr. Mead eventually acquired over 100 paintings by Alice Dow Beek, including this painting. Ms. Beek returned to Tacoma, Washington in 1907 after spending at least twelve years studying, painting, and receiving honors in Europe, including Holland, France, and Belgium. After Ms. Beek settled in Tacoma, she painted a series of scenes from those countries, including, very likely, this painting.
Approximately 36 inches wide and 52 inches high.
