8 Hands Farm is a living example of how one
family can make a huge difference in the food
we eat.

After viewing the documentary Food Inc.
Carol and Tom learned much about the
industrialized food system and found much
that they didn't like about the farming
methods and large scale animal confinement
operations that dominate the food industry.
Their view is that food is a great connector of
families and communities and that clean
farming and allowing animals to graze freely
and use their natural behaviours could have
a critical and positive role in the quality and
humanity of the food we eat. They realized
that real change would have to take place at
a grassroots level and even though they had
no farming experience, they decided to take
on that challenge.

The result is a mostly family operation which
includes their 2 children who have been
involved from the start. The name is based
on the 8 hands of the family who have
learned together and taken a journey that
has seen both glorious results and failure---
never waivering from their initial vision and
commitment. Today the operation includes
livestock, organic farming and a café and
stores.
