Bear Thomas is a woodworker who resides in Missoula, Montana. He grew up working for his family business which fostered his passion for woodworking. This passion turned into a hobby which soon turned into a full-time business making fine furniture from local & exotic hardwoods.
Each flag is hand carved from solid oak ranging in thickness from 3"-9". Oak is used because its our National Tree and is a symbol of strength. The lumber is hundreds of years old and is sourced from old turn-of-the-century mills, mines, farms and homesteads from around the country. Flag is carved on both sides to give a realistic 3-dimensional waving effect and to lighten the weight. He finishes with a tinted catalyzed lacquer and catalyzed glaze. The stars are cut from 1/8" oak and are placed on the flag individually. Mr. Thomas uses carving tools he made and designed to carve through the hard oak. Old growth oak is extremely hard and each flag takes over 180 hours to complete.
Bear's flags are on display at the State Capital Helena, VA Center in Missoula, the Missoula County Courthouse and now the Capital in Pierre South Dakota.
