John Bunyan
1628-1688
Tinker, Preacher, Prisoner, Writer
The Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyan is just one of 60 books he wrote. Tinker by trade (one who repaired pots and pans), Bunyan later became a much-loved pastor.
During the reign of Charles Il in the 1600's, non-conformists were forbidden to preach outside the established Church of England. Harassed, scorned, and persecuted by his enemies, Bunyan languished for 12 years in prison rather than give up his holy, God-given work. Shoelaces he made in prison helped provide for his family. His blind daughter Mary, led by her younger brother, walked the streets of Bedford selling them. While his persecutors long ago passed into obscurity, John Bunyan's name is known throughout the world three centuries later. The Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into 200 languages and has never been out of print to this day. His writing was second only to his preaching. The God he loved and faithfully served till his death continues to be glorified by John Bunyan's writings.
