There is currently a nationwide sports officials shortage. My goal is to train youth sports officials and find them employment. The funding would help students in need pay for training and equipment.
I wish to apply for a grant that would help youth in the Clear Creek School District and neighboring communities to train and get certified for officiating sports. My name is Phil Mauro and I teach Physical Education at Clear Creek High School. I am also heavily involved in youth sports as a coach and a sports official. Two years ago I started training baseball officials as there is a huge need across the country for up and coming young umpires. Now, I would like to branch out and train young people to officiate other sports. Sports such as basketball, football, volleyball and many more.
Clear Creek school district and surrounding area has a high need for youth and high school sports officials. It seems we are always scrambling at the last minute to find willing people to officiate our games. I believe this training could fill a need for the community plus give our youth opportunities to earn an income while staying involved with a sport they grew up playing. Being an official teaches one responsibility and leadership skills, an umpire must have vast knowledge of the rules/regulations, while looking professional and being in charge of a sporting contest. Sports officiating provides a unique opportunity to influence young people positively. The sports official is a role model who is charged with enforcing the concepts of fair play and good sportsmanship. And lastly, it teaches on the fly problem solving skills, as many officials need to make quick and accurate decisions while resolving conflicts as they arise.
There are many low income families in the area who can not afford to pay for training and necessary equipment. My wish is to assist families who can't afford training so that their children may learn a valuable skill, earn a respectable income and fill a high valued need for the community.. On average, training costs $150 per trainee and equipment can range anywhere from $100 to $400 dollars, depending on the sport. Funding would allow scholarships to be given to families in need to pay for training/certifications and purchase equipment. Along with teaching rule interpretations and applications my program offers practical training and mentorship well after their training is completed. Also, I have numerous professional contacts in the field to assist in finding work and provide opportunities for higher level officiating. Your consideration in funding my program is greatly appreciated.
