Resident Artist Collaboration - Part I

Donated by Resident Artists Ruth Easterbrook & Kevin Snipes

Dimensions: 7.75" tall x 4" diameter

Retail Value: $1,500.00

An exciting piece created by two of The Clay Studio's Resident Artists! This beautiful lidded jar - thrown by Ruth Easterbrook - features a face from Kevin Snipes on either side. Ruth Easterbrook's signature floral motif is broken up with floating eyes added by Kevin - as a fun little detail, if you look down at the handle on the lid it's another eye! The bottom is signed by both artists for a truly a one-of-a-kind collector's piece, available only through Mud Ball festivities!

Bios

Ruth Easterbrook was born in Redwood Valley, California growing up with the hills as her playground. She was first introduced to clay in High School which led her to study ceramics in college graduating in 2007 with a BFA at Syracuse University. She then spent many years learning through practice and hands-on learning as an apprentice at Hoyman-Browe Studios (CA) and assisting various artists including Whitney Smith Pottery (CA). In 2014 she began focusing on her career starting with a spring concentration class at Penland School of Craft (NC) and then spending extended time at Anderson Ranch Arts Center (CO) as a student, summer intern, and returning as an Artist In Resident in 2016. In 2019 Ruth earned her MFA in ceramics at Alfred University. Now she continues her research first as an Artist in Residence at The Harvard Ceramics Program (MA) and currently at The Clay Studio (PA). She has been awarded the honor of Emerging Artist for NCECA 2020 and has shown her work across the country and has work in the Alfred Ceramics Arts Museum collection as well as other permanent personal collections.

Kevin Snipes is an American artist born in Philadelphia and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a BFA in ceramics and drawing from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994 and concluded graduate studies at the University of Florida in 2003. He works primarily in ceramics, blurring the boundary between craft and art. Snipes combines techniques of narrative figure drawing, text, and hand-formed porcelain constructions to create objects that can be seen as multi-layered paintings.

Kevin has participated in many artist residency programs, often maintaining an itinerant existence. Through both national and international residencies including The Clay Studio, Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, New Castle, Maine, and Wesleyan College in Georgia, he has allowed a sense of place to augment his sense of identity and contribute to the dialog of his work. He has exhibiting nationally and internationally, including recent solo exhibitions at Konkling Gallery at Minnesota State University, Mankato and Plinth Gallery, Denver.
